Map Viewer

The Portal Map Viewer allows users to view and interact with shared maps. It provides real-time visibility of map and location data, tools to edit and add observations, images and pdfs as well as comprehensive export, import and map printing functionality.

Selecting Features

Select any feature to view details and perform actions on it. Feature details will appear in the sidebar. Available action buttons will appear in the bar at the bottom of the screen. Different actions are available depending on the type of feature selected and your permissions.

  • Details

    • Edit the Name, Notes and Address of the feature by clicking the text fields.

    • Change the type of the feature by clicking on ‘Point Type’, and then selecting the new type from the dropdown menu.

    • View previous versions of the feature by toggling the < and > arrows in the Feature Version section.

  • Action Buttons

    • General Actions

      delete Delete Feature: delete the selected feature. A confirmation dialog will appear before deletion.

      download Download Feature: download the selected feature as a KML, GPX, GeoJSON, or Shapefile.

    • Point Specific Actions

      move Move Point: move the point to a new location on the map. This is done by dragging and dropping the point.

      rotate Rotate Point: rotate the point by 45 degrees. This only works on certain points that are directional (e.g., Wind Direction).

      directions Get Directions: open an external map application and navigate to the selected feature.

    • Line Specific Actions

      flip Flip Line: reverse the direction of the selected line feature. This only works on certain line features that have a direction (e.g., Back Burns).

    • Line and Area Actions

      enclose Enclose Area: convert the selected line into a area feature by enclosing the area within the line.

      edit Edit Line: edit the selected line’s shape.

Note

To select multiple features, use Shift+click to select individual features or hold down Shift and draw a lasso around them.

Elevation Profile

The Elevation profile is a Portal feature that enables users to anticipate how a fire might spread uphill or downhill, as well as the steepness of terrain when deploying resources. This tool can be used in two ways:

  1. Checking elevation using temporary points

    • Navigate to the “Tools” tab in the sidebar

    • Select the “Elevation Profile” tool

    • Mark points on the map and watch the elevation profile appear in the bottom right corner of the screen

  2. Checking Elevation for existing line or areas

    • Select an existing line or area feature on the map

    • Click the “Elevation Profile” button in the action bar at the bottom of the screen
